Stanje praks ohranjanja tal v Silti Woreda, južna Etiopija

Povzetek

Erozija tal je glavna težava etiopskih višinskih območij, kjer je povprečna izguba tal 42 ton/ha/leto, pri čemer je izguba tal v globini več kot 2 cm/leto, kar pomeni 1 do 2 milijardi USD na leto (znesek, ki je primerljiv z letnim proračunom države). Večja izguba tal je bila ocenjena na jugu Etiopije, kjer je gosto poseljeno višavje. Velika večina prebivalstva se preživlja z gozdom, živinorejo in kmetijstvom. Ekonomske razmere silijo revno podeželsko prebivalstvo, da izkorišča okolje za svoje preživetje. Glede na ta pomen je bilo delo opravljeno v kraju Silti Woreda na jugu Etiopije z naslednjimi cilji: ugotoviti trenutno stanje in trend ohranjanja tal, oceniti družbeno-kulturne, gospodarske, biofizikalne in institucionalne omejitve/politiko/podporni sistem za izvajanje in vzdrževanje ohranitvenih praks. Študija je pokazala, da se avtohtone tehnologije ohranjanja tal štejejo za učinkovite metode ohranjanja. Vendar sta revščina in neozaveščenost prebivalstva glavni oviri.
